     Puli Inji / sweet and sour pickle is one of the inevitable dish in Kerala Onam sadhya. Taste of ginger, tamarind, chilly and jaggary gives a nice taste to this dish. Let's see how we can prepare this awesome Kerala delicacy.

Ingredients
  • Ginger - 3/4 cup skin peeled and finely chopped
  • Tamarind –  Large lemon sized ball
  • Green Chillies - 7 finely chopped
  • Turmeric powder – ¼ tsp.
  • Red chilly powder – 1 tsp.
  • Jaggery – ½ - 1 cube.
  • Hing – 1 pinch.
  • Salt - to taste

To make tempering:
  • Coconut Oil - 4 tbsp
  • Mustard Seeds – ½  tsp
  • Curry leaves
  • Red Chillies - 2 broken.

Method of prepartion:
  1. Soak tamarind in 1- 1 1/2 cup of warm water. Wash ginger, peel off the skin and chop it finely. Chop green chillies finely.
  2. Heat 2 tbspn. of coconut oil in a pan. Transfer ginger, curry leaves and green chilllies to it. Roast it until it nicely browned.
  3. Then add turmeric powder and red chilly powder (adjust spice level according to your taste), stir it until raw smell goes.
  4. Pour tamarind water, mix well and allow it to boil.
  5. Then add jaggary (I like more sweetness in puli inji, if you don’t prefer more sweetness, then reduce the quantity of it), salt and hing. Allow it to thick in a low flame about 5-10 mins.
  6. Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds,when it splutters add whole red chilly and curry leaves. Pour this tempering to the puli inji which we already pepared. Mix well.
  7. Now our tasty puli inji is ready to serve. Serve with rice. Enjoy!!!
  8. Allow it to cool down then store in a clean bottle.

  1. I like the festival of the Onam very much it is the best festival which is being celebrated in Kerala. This is the best place in order to spend out the holidays along with the friends and the family. Beside this it is very often being choosed by the newly married couples to spend out the honeymoon . I love to see this place very much.
